DJ Nash is one of Philly’s rising talent that you should watch out for in the upcoming years. From DJing at a Made in America after-party at the Fillmore to opening up for rapper Buddy at a Heineken event, she is taking the music and fashion scene in Philly by a storm, one mix and one outfit at a time. This chic DJ appeared on the scene back in 2015 and has since been guest-featured at some of the most popular venues in the city. The way she mixes songs together reminds people of the good old times and she has frequent “standing in the corner” party-goers heading onto the dance floor to get a closer feel to her energetic music mixes. “I play a lot of old stuff, I want people to just enter a zone,” says DJ Nash on our FaceTime call. “I want people to feel like they’re back in the day or something. I want them to feel [like] ‘dang, I miss that, that’s different’ you know?”

Before DJ Nash’s set, it’s just people playing all top 40 hits. She really gets the crowd going with her freestyle playlists. “I want people to feel like they really had fun, like genuinely had fun. People come up to me like ‘Yo, I was sweating!’ and I’m like ‘Oh, I really made this person sweat, like.’”

Although DJ Nash brings the spicy mixes and good vibes, being a female DJ isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There are some adversities that she faces as a female DJ in the music game. “Yeah, people do be tryna play you, a.k.a. the boys, and you be better than half of them, I’m throwing shots, that’s just how it is,” she says. “They try to get over on me a lot. I’m so nice and being a DJ now I gotta get mean a little bit to dudes because either they try to take advantage of you — they say it’s a friendship but they really try to ‘talk’ to you, like it’s too much. You really just got to get ignorant a little bit.”

Despite the adversity that DJ Nash faces, she remains inspired to keep pursuing her music career through the strong support of friends and family. “The people around me, they keep me pretty sane. You know my best friends, my boyfriend, and all of them because I’m telling you, it’s different stuff every week. The scene seems so chill, but it’s like Love & Hip Hop, it really is, it’s so crazy. And it’s not just the dudes, it’s girls too, like it’s a mess.”

Regardless of the petty drama, DJ Nash stays booked and busy every month and will be DJing outside of Philly for the first time in Miami at a foam party for Art Basel. This is a big step towards her dream of one day mixing at a national (or international) festival soon. “My dream event to DJ at [would] probably [be] a festival of course. Maybe Coachella, that would be crazy. And just like playing in Europe in general. I don’t really be asking for much.”

Fun Facts:

1. DJ Nash’s favorite emoji that describes her is the girl with the hand up. She comments “that’s me, that’s my music, that’s everything.”

2. DJ Nash’s end-goal is “to really be an artist. DJing is part of where I want to be, but I think overall I want to be an artist, maybe like a producer.”

3. DJ Nash got started back in high school when her teacher needed a DJ for the school’s annual fashion show.
